The tensioner is spring loaded. How to loosen it depends on the type. Most of them use the bolt in the middle of the pulley to lever the tensoiner up. My 84 has a tab with a notch in it that a pry bar fits in.
I'd loosen and rebolt down the alternator to make sure it was straight.
