Default ignition switch problem?

Howdy!

I have a problem with my ignition key switch or possibly a related problem in my '89 LX Cpe 5.0.

If I turn the key past a certain point, the motor will not crank. I can back up the switch to a certain point, and the motor cranks and runs just fine. It's almost like something is wrong with the switch.

Now the interesting part. Today, while I was running the motor and cleaning the interior, my knee bumped the bottom portion of the dash to the left of the steering wheel and the car shut off... just like the key switch was turned off. I duplicated the problem twice more. Now it sounds more like a loose connection or possibly a short somewhere in the dash??

First... does my post make any sense?? Second, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas??

Thanks!

Bruce

Check the electrical portion of the ignition switch located on the column under the dash. They are famous for going bad. Have a look at the plug connection as well.

Thanks for the info! It's definitely the switch. I pulled the steering column covers off today and discovered that the switch is coming apart.

Now should I get the switch fromone of the localauto parts stores or get a Ford OEM switch??

Bruce

Thanks for all the help!! Got the OEM switch installed this evening without much difficulty. The old switch came apart as I was pulling it from the connector.

Bruce
