question about primering a bumper
ok so i just sanded down my bumper but wanted to know which way i could go on primering it..i know i can go to a body shop and have them spray it for me but i also know that autozone sells a spray can primer for cars..im only primering the bumper for now just wanted to know if the spray can primer is a ok primer to put on the car or is it best to go to body shop..and no im not painting the bumper myself only painting the primer on it..i will take the bumper to autobody shop to get painted just seeing if its worth saving some money by primering it by myself or am is the sparycan primer a waste??thanks for the help

RE: question about primering a bumper
I don't see a problem with spraying it yourself as long as you get a good primer, the only problem with rattlecans on large areas is that it is hard to get them to spray flat and even and look good.

RE: question about primering a bumper
my hood on my old bronco was getting some surface rust. so i sanded it down and used some rattle can primer and then some flat black, and it still looked pretty good three yrs later when i sold the truck.

RE: question about primering a bumper
first off i cannot see the pic so i am using my imagination at the whole job *****
ok just so you know......primering over paint can be bad....primers are typically laquer based and can cause "lifting" of old paint. it will look crinkly if it lifts, hopefully it did not
also unless you sanded down to bare plastic, there is no need to primer it, fresh paint can go right over old paint.
your car has a 2 stage paint on it, base coat and clear coat
you may have just made it harder for them to paint it, because if the entire bumper cover needs paint now, there is less room to blend it in b4 they clear it
and if you happen to primer steel parts... you need to get paint on it right away, because primer absorbs water, keeping the recently bare steel moist and causes rust
ok that was painting 101....any q's hit me up

RE: question about primering a bumper
ok i clicked it as a link
now questions ?
did you sand the entire bumper cover ? if not it will not stick
did you use a primer w/ any flex additive ? if not it will probably chip and crack from flexing
all existing paint needs at minimum to be scotch padded b4 any paint goes on it
if sanding, typically 600 for primer , 1000-1500 for final coat

RE: question about primering a bumper
i sanded it down to bare plastic..and i used a can of primer from autozone to primer it..not sure if it was flex additive..i think so cause it was sold at auto parts store and its made for auto..so im guessing its flex additive..but not sure..and also im buying a cobra bumper and im going to take that to the body shop to get primed and painted so i just threw some primer from autozone on the gt bumpercause im looking to get rid of the bumper..just to put something on it..hope that answers afew questions..thanks for the advice..
