Default Engine Rattle

I have a 2000 gt and when i am accelerating and runing about 2700 rpm i can hear a rattle from what i think is the engine. Also there is a similar noice when at idle. I am trying to avoid taking it into the shop so any help would be great.

Try to rev the engine from under the hood so that you can be up close and personal with the engine compartment. The other thing you can try is to powerbrake the car if it is a auto or set the parking brake and drag the clutch to put some load on the engine while someone listens and see if you can identify it. Your first sentence would have most believe it is a ping (detonation) but when you mention that there is a similar noise at idle is sort of blows that theory unless they are two different problems. It could be a heat shield on the cat conv rattling.

If the rattle seems to be coming from under the car it is probably the converters. They are notorious for this. The best way is to bring the rpm up to just over idle sitting still and they usually will rattle there.
