Default exhaust popping

i have a 94 gt that is pretty much stock except for a k&n filter and flowmaster 40 series mufflers. sometimes when i try and accelerate, the car seems to lose power and studder and then a pop sound will come from the exhaust and my power will pick back up. it just seems like it is building up back pressure and losing power and then the pop releases it and i get my power back. anyone know what this could be? is it clogged cats or something?

Well the backfiring can be because you only have aftermarket mufflers. Get a catback and an aftermarket midpipe. That should eliminate popping.

well...i have had the same series mufflers on for as long as i have had the car (about 6 years) and i have never had any problems like this before, so im pretty sure its not the mufflers. but ill have to check into my A/F ratio. whats the easiest way to have this looked at? im assuming ill have to hook it up to a computer of some sort?

If it was just making popping sounds id say it could be the exhuast but since its also running bad theres something wrong with the way your cars mixing/burning the gas. Is it throwing any codes?you could pull a few plugs to see if your running rich/lean.

replace your fuel filter and clean your air filter, if you still have the problem, try plugs and wires one may not be fireing. i have also had a similar problem with a 69 stang i had and it was one of the cam lobes rounded so it kept it from firing.

i just replaced the plugs and fuel filter about 3 months ago and i replaced the wires and cleaned the air filter all within the last week and its still doing it. and when i crank it sometimes, the idle will jump up to about 1600 for about 15 secs and then drop back down to normal. while the idle is up, the CEL will come on, but its never on after i drive it anywhere to get it checked so it doesnt throw any codes. i wouldnt need a new fuel filter after just a few months of driving would i? and im sure the plugs havent gone bad yet.

what about the coil packs? it would only take one not fireing to cause it, the idle kicking up, i had that problem in a 94gt and 95 cobra and i think it was because i didnt have a factory cam. the 94 quit doing it when i found i had a cracked harmonic balancer. no your filters should still be good. i'd check your plugs to see if any look different then the rest. does it backfire through the intake or exhaust?

94's don't have coil packs.
