How chips work
So i've got my exhaust done and no longer have cats. Of course now the check engine light is on. I want to have that turned off. From what I understand I need a new chip in order to do this. If i'm getting a chip I also understand that I can bump up my timming and not have to get a timing adjuster. However, I don't know the differnce between tunners and chips and how they work. I've seen some chips on ebay from anywhere from $10 to $50. i don't want to get somethig cheap but if I don't have to pay $400 to turn off my check engine light and maybe get a little performance I would want it.
dont buy any chip that isnt a brand name. so no ebay chips. most of them are just resistors that f*ck with your maf.
chips and tunes do pretty much the same thing. a tuner is hand held and usually has multiple settings which you can change when you want. a tuner reprograms the stock computer.
a chip attaches to the computer and takes in all the readings from the sensors and then tells the computer what to do to make more hp.
both usually just alter fuel curve and add a little timing. the tuners though can remove rev limites and governers on speed

So where do i get a chip and how much is the price of most chips. To me, spending $400 on a tuner is a lot buck and not as much bang as pullies and maybe some more intake work. I figure if I could get a chip for less than half than that, I could get the Check Engine Light off and the timing moved up I would be better off. What do you guys think?
So what you guys are telling is that I'll get more HP out of spending my money on a timing adjuster and pullies rather than a $400 chip? If I'm spending $400 and only getting a minimal gain vs large gains with other mods why would I get a chip?
