Default Emissions

How old does a car have to be for it to be considered legally exempt from emissions? I was thinking 20 years...I hope, which would hopefully mean next year I can go cat free exhaust. If not, I plan on just putting on a high flow cat with the new exhaust. When I turbo it, I will be doing the exhaust too. Anyhow, same would go for the smog equipment...or does it have smog equipment?

depends on your state too. in my state if you are under 5k miles annually then you are exempt from emissions. check with your dept of motor vehicles. this type of info can be found online.

In CA its anything before 74 I believe is exemt from smog. I don't think its moving forward ever. And even down to 67 they are required to maintain any factory emissions related equipment.

I was gonna say before 1974 also. But considering it's California and they have THE STRICTEST emission laws, I really can't say for sure.
