Default Strange noise, diagnosis needed!

Hey guys, today is Saturday night, and I have a problem. I came home from work tonight, and as I opened the door, my engine was still running, I noticed a noise coming from my engine. It is a little hard to explain, but I guess imagine sharpening a knife on the sharpening stone or a straigtening rod, it's a split second of that noise on and off, on and off.

I need to go to work tomorrow and I have a 50+ mile drive on Monday, typical day for me, so I would like to get it fixed before then, so I want your advice to cut down the time it would take to find the problem. Less time diagnosing, more time fixing.

My first guess is a loose pulley, and if so, my first guess is the water pump pulley since that was the last one I messed with when taking off my fan for the electric fan.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

I had some rust build up on my balancer on mine. The timing needle was so close it was slightly rubbing causing the same noise. With as much rain as we have had that is possible it is surface rust on the balancer.Once I cleaned it the noise stopped.

That makes A LOT of sense, I'll definitely check it out. I actually have some rust removing sand paper handy too...

BTW, just wondering, but did the noise occur in sets of two?

Kind of if you look at the balance there is a spot where it will not touch then it will.
That could be one possibility. There could still be others.

Yah, I'm just looking for ideas, but so far your idea sounds more like it than mine. I think a loose pulley would be a whole lot worse than it is.

Well, I just got home from work, it was dark, I was tired, so I just popped the hood for a little while to see if I can hear or see an obvious problem, was unable to, so just decided to wait until tomorrow to take another look/listen. Yah, it's kind of like metal to metal scratching, but very quick and on off on off on off on off...

Imagine mustang8719's example, it pretty much would sound like his situation. I hope it's that simple though...
