Hey guys i bought my 98 GT 2 years ago and only has 78,000 miles on it...Sometimes when i put the car in reverse it pops out of gear, and sometimes when im shifting into third gear it doesnt want to go, and i have to try to put it in third a few times...if anyone knows what this is, or has any ideas on what it is and how much it might cost me..please let me know...Thank you

I had a similar problem
with my 85 GT stick.
I had the tranny fluid changed, and there
was a question of the recommended fluid to
use. We put in the wromg one and almost immediately
It would not go in or out of geer right. Like the
rubber swelled and got tight. Changed to the
other fluid and then it was ok.

 

Synchros?

 

yea my uncle said it might be the synchros...but the tranny place is going to charge $300 just to look at it...not even to fix it...how much would synchros cost? or is my tranny fubar

 

Tranny issues can be hard to diagnose. It does sound like the synchros. I've never heard of the fluid making it do that, but that might be a good place to start. If its not properly lubed that could cause some issues.

 

Check the shifter. Sometimes if the shift boot can apply pressure to the stick and pop it out of gear. Or if the shifter is wearing out it can creat slop and make it tough to get enough throwto get it all the way into gear.
