The vehicle won't go over a certain speed and the cats will be very hot, maybe even red hot. This should light a MIL and store a code.

Yeah when one went bad on a truck of mine I couldn't go over 60mph. It also rattled really loud. You can get a universal cat for like 70 bucks or a high flow one if you want to upgrade.

Well you hit the nail on the head! Thats what mine is doing to a T. It only does it once in awhile though. I drive about 40 miles to work in the morning and about 3/4 of the way there after going between 70 and 80 mph it will all the sudden cut out and will still go but not over 60 and has a hard timing going up a hill. Once I reach the jobsite I park it for 8 hours and drive it all the way home with no problems. Is that the start of it going bad? If it is can I get a straight pipe with no cat and get a MIL eliminator and have it be fine?

yeah u can. you may have to search around for an exhaust shop thats willing to cut the cat out and weld a pipe in because its not legal for them to do it. if you pull the exhaust off and tell them its for an off road only truck they might be more willing.

Is this offroad enough?
Its a 99 Z71
6" suspension lift in the pic but it has a 3" body lift now and not in the same condition as the pic, its a little older now and the dents have added character. Best thing of all its my gas saving daily driver! I was told if you take it to the shop without a cat you can have it installed without a cat.

Most shops won't do 'no cats' since it removes pollution control on a street registered vehicle. It's illegal.
