Default How do I know....

I just bought an 88 LX. The guy that I bought it from told me that the speedometer didn't work any more. He told me that it has 3.55 gears. I found out that it was just the speedo gear. It was a 23 tooth. I had my wife pace me and I was going about 5 miles slower than she was. How would I be able to tell what gears I have if I were to take the back cover off?

Thanks. I'm going to do that when I replace my wheel bearings next weekend. I've been hearing this grinding, you know metal on metal. I'm hoping that this guy that I got this car from hasn't been driving this car to long like this.
