Default Short Throw Shifter??

I have a 1996 mustang, 3.8L. Is it worth putting a short throw shifter on it? If so what kind should I get and about how much. I just put a new clutch on it too so I would like to get one soon if it's worth it.

Worth it depends on you and how you drive. If the stock one feels fine to you and you don't shift really hard, then it's not worth it.

If the stock one feels too mushy or you have a habit of slamming through the gears really hard, then get an aftermarket shifter with shift stops.

Best one out there is the MGW. Tri-Ax is also very good. Price is right about $150 for either of these.

It depends on my mood. If I feel old and want to save gas then I shift easily and lightly. But if I feel like I can't be loud enough or go fast enough then I shift hard and fast. What about putting a racing clutch on it? Would it be a good idea with the short throwshifter?

Not much point in putting a racing clutch on a stock 3.8L. A bone stock clutch handles the HP just fine and is considerably cheaper.

I would get the short-shifter. I have one and it makes every-day driving easier as well as makes shifting a lot more fun when you want to shift fast.

Is it a hassle to install? Or just have it installed by a shop?

they'll come with the shifter.

Really, don't worry about it. It is VERY easy. Essentially you remove the clips holding the boot and bezel around the existing shfiter... unbolt the old shifter and pull it out... then put the new one in and bolt it down and adjust it. If you can change a tire, you can change out your shifter.

I mean, if _I_ can do it, a drunk monkey with one broken hand and cataracts in both eyes could do it.

^+1 lol I usually end up messing up more than I fix when I **** around with my car and I did the install in 15 minutes. lol All you do is unbolt the stock shifter and bolt the new shifter in. Simple as that.
