Default Decisions, decisions (please help)

I will be hopefully buying a new car by the end of summer. Currently, I drive a 1998 ford ranger. Cars have always been my thing, and driving a truck doesn't really suit me (although it does the job). I mainly have two options. 1. I can either take over payments for my moms (i know its stereotypical, and what your thinking) 2006 v6 mustang w/ pony pkg, and get that (I know v6 stangs get ridiculed all the time). Or 2. Save up as much as possible (probably would be around $4000?) over the summer and look for a good used 3000gt tt or stealth rt-tt. I would then sell my truck for around $3000, giving me 7000ish to work with in that case. The mustang is a great looking car, but gets made fun of all the time for being a 6. It would be more expensive to pay for with payments, but less expensive to maintain. Whereas a 3kgt or a rt-tt would be less expensive to buy, and potentially be more to maintain. Other factors are I live in iowa, so I am really wanting awd. I'm only 17, so insurance is going to suck (although I have not done any checking). And I do have a part time job with a somewhat stable income ($650ish a month ). But I will be having more hours once school is out + I have other jobs I can do for $$.

So, after reading my life story, what do you guys think that I should do? Get the stang, try to get a 3kgt, or just tough it out and stick with my truck? The reason I am asking you guys is because you people know more about the maintenance costs and reliability of the mustangs than me. I also posted this in the 3si Forums for them to have input too.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out!

Well, me being a guy who has both car and truck, both pigs on gas, and me having also have been a kid, its a big world with lots of choices. Do you like stangs more than imports? Do you like to work on your own vehicles? I just paid $4.15 for gas, and Im thinking your little Ranger doesnt sound too bad right now.

I think you should reflect in your own mind what you really want, because if you dont think it through, you may get stuck with a car you dont want to/cant work on, and a whole lot of regret.

But to answer your question, yes those imports are harder/more $ to work on, but honestly, theyre probably just as fun as your mom's 6. But I say Stang ftw.

Keep the Ranger and dump a 347 in it.

if you were to buy a mustang, be sure you know a thing or two about cars. mustangs tend to need small occasional repairs. these are cheap and are no biggie if you know how to fix it yourself.

my vote would go to buy a v8 model mustang, but i might be a bit biased.

if your moms mustang it a 5 speed then yea get it.
But when you can get a 99-04 GT for as low as $6,000 ( i know i almost bought one) why not just get that? it may have 100k miles but our motors last a lifetime and are very hard to destroy.

Well my moms stang is an automatic (which i also hate, because my truck is a stick and i love driving a manual). And the only reason I have the option to get her car is because she wants me to take over payments so she can get a new truck. If I don't buy the car from her, she will be stuck with the car for a while longer. I would much rather have a gt over a v6 though. We were looking at a 96 gt a while back that was alright. It was a 5spd and had a 140k on it, they wanted 4200. My parents didn't want me to get it because the odo. was broken (which i understand). Looking back, I am glad i did not get that car. I like to call the 94-98 mustangs fru-fru cars (sorry if any of you have one). I also don't think that i could afford insurance on a gt. I don't make very much.
