the pump came with a gasket that hook the pick-up tube to the pump itself. i know that some chevy's would not use a gasket that hooks the pump to the block, is this the same way?

This is a scan right out of the factory service manual. It clearly shows a gasket in both places. It's a pressurized passage, of course it has a seal.
