Default Starter not dis-engaging

I have a 68 289 that I replaced the starter on. Old starter was not turning motor hard enough (I think I killed it when trying to install dizy). The starter certainly is turning motor hard enought nowto start, but occasionly spins like it does not dis-engage. I tried reinstalling, (top bolt first then bottom), giggling and loosening bolts a bit. The bolt loosening worked best, but seems lame. Any ideas? BTW-This is the first car I have worked on, so I have been relying on friends to help. Thanks!!!

they make starter shims for gm cars so i would imagine they makem for fords too. its either starter shims or your starter already went bad. i toasted a reman starter in 45 mins before. and no i wasn't trying to start it the entire45 minutes. lol

I have also returned autozone starters in the same day before because they are $hit. I have returned non Motorcraft Solenoids too within a week because they are just built so cheap and every now and then you get one that was just destined to fail from the factory, unless it actually came from a Ford dealership. You definitely know when your starter stays engaged. It's an unmistakable sound. I would check starter and solenoid first. I had to bench test an autozone starter like a dozen times in a row before it failed. I did it right in the store in front of the employees because I got so fed up with my starter dying or staying engaged every other day of the week, and I just wanted my money back for a week old starter that was crap.

I would bet on the solenoid being the problem.

Thanks for info.. I went down to auto store and they only had GM shims. They suggest I pull and bring in to test if engaging properly. Probably do that. I had also just replaced the solenoid.
Thanks for feedback.
