Default hood mounted tach

Is there a purpose fora hood mounted tach...other than rpm information? i guess i wanna know why you would have it on the hood instead of on the column/cluster? visibility on the track?

i have seen this on drag cars, but never on a street car. It's just like a normal tach, but its in a pod thats outside the car..

Some 70's Firebirds came with a factory hood tack. It's an OK place to have it, right in front of your face, as long as windshield glare doesn't obscure the view.

some of the roadrunners came with them too. i was mostly just wondering the purpose. i didnt know it they functioned differently than a cluster/column mounted one and it made them more accurate or something. i guess visibility when haulin a' down the strip would be the only purpose.

plus it looks kinda cool.
