IRS rides better because one rear wheel can take a bump without affecting the other rear wheel. Solid rear axles (live) are notoriously skittish on bumpy corners but they hook up better when you launch because the forces on the right wheel force the left wheel down. It also helps minimize wheel hop because the two axles are locked together. The IRS is notorious for wheel hop.
According to the ford guys and all the magazines, they kept a solid for price and for the fact that, apparently mustang owners like to do some sort of drag racing every once in a blue moon. Also, they keep saying that their live axle is engineered well enough that it delivers a comparable ride to irs.

Ford does say that their live axle delivers a comparable ride to IRS but it;s total BS.....especially when you lower it. Mine jumps all over the place on bumpy corners.

the 05s probably have a much more refined solid than the 99-04s.

Notice they stayed with a live rear axle though despite the criticism from "reviewers"? Every review I read on the '05 said "why didn't ford go IRS?"
You have to remember that the IRS rear wheel hops on launch, sometimes braking the half shafts. I ask around and Cobra owners say the IRS is to wobbly with the stock rubber bushings in the control arms.
