Default ignition key

Hey there, new to the forum and have a couple questions, but I should probably ask them in the correct place so here is #1. Ford dealer tells me that my key for the car has a chip in it and has to be programmed by the dealer. when I get a new one cut. Its an 02 gt, not sure if they are blowing smoke or not, as the key is thin. Anyway is that true on an 02? Can I program it myself? I have an extra remote from my 01 that got totalled by an RV with no brakes(not a good day) and I want to program that with the 02, anybody know how to do that? Thanks for any info!

The chip is in the plastic area of the key. It will turn the car on the accesories, but will not actually start you car. Locksmith or the dealer can do it, call around to see who is cheaper.

not sure I understand, the chip turns the accessories on? Cant I just cut 2 keys w/o the chip and put the chip one under the dash so it is always there? THanks for the help so far!

NO. The chip is part of the process when you turn the key.

Go to Walmart, and get another key. They have the keys and the ability to program them there. That will save you $50 off of the $100 dealer cost.

I think there is a website called PROGRAMMYREMOTE.COM that may help, too.
