CRAZY gas mileage
hey guys i recently took a trip in my 88 gt hatch 5 speed. it was about 200 miles each way so 400 total. I got great mileage. It was crazy. All i have on the car proformance wise is a full exhaust and air cleaner. so its pretty much stock. I usually get like 8mpg just drivin around town. On the trip i got 23mpg. I was amazed. 8.8 gallons to get home and it was like 220miles. i made a little mistake getting on the highway and got lost.

in other words, you must have some aggressive city driving habits to get 8mpg.
i bet you fly through those gears when you accelerate dont you?

Yea muscle cars actually tend to get decent highway miles because they don't have to work as hard (lower RPMSs) as a Civic to maintain speeds. Only problem is city driving, constant stop and go, and sitting at red lights, which is what really kills gas mileage for big blocks. On a trip to the beach, my Corvette got 34 mpg all highway driving, no traffic, easy 60-65 mph constant speeds, vs girlfriends Civic at 33 mpg. Driving around the city, however, in rush hour, the Corvette gets 6-7 mpg, vs the Civic's 20. It's sweet having a muscle ride that gets hybrid like milage but with all the power.
I am getting 23mph in my 98 GT in the city. And about 30mpg on the highway!!! Of course I've been pulling it out of gear and coasting to stop lights rather then leaving it in until the last possible second.
Also, I was getting 21mpg in the city no matter how I drove the car!! Granny style or aggressive, it really didn't make but maybe a 1mpg difference. I will recommend (for people with over 50k on their car) a "fuel induction cleaning". It raised me from 18mpg to 21mpg when I had it done a while ago. If you have one done, make sure they clean your injectors, cylinders, and intake....or else its not worth it. And its not the stuff you can buy at a store and just put in your fuel tank. Its usually a "2 can" program....one for the tank, one that they put in something that resembles and A/C recharger. I can say with almost 100% certainty, that if your car has over 50k and you've never had it done.....it will help immensly!! I don't even have to run 91octane in my GT, I get away with 87 without any problems!!! No engine knock and no mileage difference.
