Default Scratch repair...please help!

I need some help.

The other night some dip**** keyed my Mustang...both sides, headlight to taillight. Some of the marks are superficial, but some are down to bare metal. I have a $500 deductible on my insurance, I'd rather not spend that much, so I'd like to do it myself, if possible.

What advice would anyone have? Where does one even begin with scratch repair?

Hey GatorNavi, sorry to hear that. What a dip****. I'm not a body/paint expert, but if the scratch is down to the metal and is longer that an inch, it would be hard to touch it up. Probably wouldn't look to good either. Superficial scratches can be taken out with Scratch X or Clay Bar most of the time, but deep scratches down to the metal are going to require something more extensive. You may be better off getting the entire car repainted (same color of course). If all it cost you is your $500 deductible that is not a bad deal. How old is your car and what shape is the paint in?

if it is to the bare metal you have to sand out the scratch primeit back up and block out the primer and may have to prime it again make sure you feather out the paint so it is a smooth paint edge so you don't just have a dip where the scratch is. I can tell you this also if you can feel it you will see it. it takes a very trained hand so it maybe better off left to a pro paint and body work is lots harder then it looks I know I did it for 15 years. Good luck with it. and sorry to here some *** HOLE did this to your car.

Yeah, the only way to get something that deep out is to repaint it like stated above. I used to do body work and I can think of any tricks for something that deep without seeing it.

If it were my car i'd suck up the deductible and get both sides of the car repainted. Scratches that deep and long are going to look like crap touched up even with wet sanding and such. sorry man.

+1. Yeah, sorry dude but Id say thats the best way, unless you love doing body work. Something so small can be such a hassle. Reason #1 I dont drive like an *** around town = kids with keys
