Default AOD Troubles

One day last week my transmission slipped going into overdrive while normal driving, like a slipping clutch. 1,2,3 are fine i just have to let of the gas when it shifts into overdrive and baby that gear to maintain speed. The filter and fluid was changed and it did not help. Since i dont drive on the highway anyway because of 4.10 gears how long do you think 1,2, and 3 will hold up? they are completly indipendant right? I have $1,000 to work with for right now but i was planning on spending it on a set of heads or intake, other mods.
I have several choices maybe you guys could help or give me diff ideas?
I am concerned about the power handleing abbillities of the stock AOD especially once i hit around 300hp because thats what it is rated for. With this $1,000 i could be at it or pretty close. This may be an oppurtunity to buy a trashed 5.0 with a manual in it and do the swap. I could just buy a rebuild kit, better torque converter and put in a shift kit but i am still thinking. I could just put the money aside and keep modding until i really need a new transmission lol.

I trust you have an automatic but I don't know exactly what year. There is alot of difference between earlier autos and the later '90's ('98+) versions. Sounds as though your overdrive bands (clutches) are shot. Very weak overdrive bands in all the Mustang's as that gear is strictly an overdrive cruising gear. If you run much at WOT (wide open throttle) in 4th gear overdrive, you will eventually ralph your tranny (4th gear) for sure. Here is a link where you can learn a whole lot about your automatic. They make excellent shift kits and other mods too: http://www.baumannengineering.com/aodeupgr.htm

Good luck!
