Tuners?

Tuners?
I was looking at a tuner on americanmuscle.com
I've never used a tuner and I'm pretty clueless about them (all I know is they can increase Horsepower and apparently give me better MPG)
My question is: How do these things do this? Also, if they can really do what they say then why doesn't the factory just do this in the first place before they release the car--why doesn't Ford tune the cars so they can get more Horsepower and better MPG and provide a better vehicle?

well i would get a good chip that has a program that can go onto a computer or laptop. that is the best thing to get cuz then you can check your air to full as well as the shift points and so much more and you can also adjust them with that program

Good question. The 2 biggest uses for tuners (that Ford "can't" do)
1) Tuners can be used to take advantage of mods you've done to your engine
2) You can give your car a "premium gas tune". Advance your timing for more HP but need to use premium gas
