Dumb question about overdrive
Ok, so I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to cars, so can someone fill me in on what overdrive exactly is? I was messing around with it the other day, and I noticed that when I turned it off the tach jumped up about 500 or 700 rpm's or so, and naturally that gave me some more power, which is nice. I'm just wondering if there's any danger to my engine or transmission if I keep it off, or if it's safe to switch back and forth. Any help would be appreciated.

Overdrive means your driveshaft is spinning faster than your crankshaft. Not using it will give you lousier fuel economy & obviously make your engine rev/work harder.
If you're just cruising down the highway leave overdrive on. If you're driving around town go ahead & shut it off. But, probably not a good thing to be toggling it on/off constantly while driving
