The Best
I'm going to be buying a new car soon and was looking for a little input. My goal is to build the fastest mustang possible.
I'll have about 2-4k to drop on the base car. From this point on for the next couple years I see putting about another 10k in it. I want to make it a street monster. I hope to grow as a driver as the car grows in speed. I want to upgrade the car personally and learn as I go. I have little to no actual automotive experience.
So.... What what would be my best choice in the year ranges of 60's-73 and 94+. 15k total budget. 2-4k initial.
My main choice initially will be based on looks and maneuverability.
If anyone has any good beginner level information sources on racing, souping up/adjusting cars or anything in general that should be known by car enthusiasts please post them. I'm eager to learn as much as possible about all of this.
Thanks in advance. Can't wait for your replies.
If anyone else has any suggestions on something other than a mustang for these purposes I would love to hear them.

Well 2-4k is really not much at all for a base car. I mean you MIGHT be able to get a 60 series one for that price but it is going to require serious restoration right off the bat to even have it running.
I suggest buying a fox body first for maybe a bit more.

Getting the base car isn't really the problem. I have seen plenty matching my criteria posted on craigslist in the past couple weeks. I'm more concerned about which one I should go for. The 64-73 94+ models are appealing to me. For some reason i just cant stand the foxbody style stangs.
A Foxbody notchback is probably your BEST choice for a starting platform. Notches are lighter than hatchbacks and look sick when modded, and their engine bays are fairly roomy for engine options. Grab a 4banger automatic for dirt cheap & get started!
Well, the fox body is the best to make quick. But since that is out, go with a 94-95 if you want a 5.0 based car or 96-98 for a modular. You'll get alot of added weight but you'll get disc brakes too. You're not going to get a 60's mustang for $4000 without having to spend alot of $$$ to make it fast. Building a "monster" for 10k is going to be tough unless you do alot of the work yourself.
