DISAPPEARING OIL
My son has a 2001 Mustang GT that is going through a quart of oil every 600-700 miles. There are no visable leaks or smoking. It has a cold air intake on it. The guy we bought it from had the cat's taken off. The car runs great. This is the second engine we've put in it. the first engine ran dry on oil and seized. We were not aware of any problems with that engine and within a month it ran dry. Does anyone have an idea as to what's up?

check and see if you can find any Ford service bulletins on oil consumption if you cant see it leaking it has to be burning it there is only so many places it can go. have you tried different oil or maybe a heavier weight.

I don't know if your 4.6 is plagued with the same problems as the first 205 hp versions.
Had a 95 T bird with major oil consumption. It was valve seals, which is a common problem among those cars. First hint is after extended idling, like at a drive through line up or bumper to bumper traffic. It's smoke city out the tailpipes when you accelerate after.

First of all, oil is cheap. I had a Toyota with the same problem 1 qrt/600 miles and it has been like that for the last 250 000 miles. One of the oils I liked was Exxon 10w-40 that seems to stay longer inside. Do you see any smoke from the tailpipe? Did you check if the engine is all dry and clean? Go under and see, may be some seals? In any case its not a major problem, but the reason cats were taken off might be that they were fouled by the oil in the exhaust may be? But its just my guess I am no mechanic...

check your plugs, and tail pipe as previouslly mentioned. look for leaks at rear main seal. valve cover gaskets, i dont know if the 4.6 have these or not buck check the cam seals. check your pcv valve out to. other then that stick some cardboard underneath and look for a drip, then where it came from.
