<IMG src=smileys/smiley19.gif border="0"> Ok, I have an 87 LX with a 2.3L and it won't run. It starts fine every timebut itdies right away. It had a complete Tune-Up w/ Air Filter and an Oil Change about 300 miles ago. I justreplaced the EGR Sensor and theFuel Filter after this problem started (or didn't <IMG src=smileys/smiley11.gif border="0">) but, that didn't help. We tested the Ox Filter with a new one when the car was warmed up but running rough and dieing and that wasn't the issue either. I was able to get it home but once I parked it and it cooled down over night, it startsstrong but then itjust dies, if I try to give it any gas, it still just dies. It won't run at all now. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.</P>

I know that MAF equipped Subarus will do similar crap if one of the vacuum lines to the intake gets unhooked (happens every time the air filter is checked).

Not sure about 4-banger Mustangs though. Check vacuum lines?
Check electrical connections?

I should have mentioned this also, wehad checked the vacume lines yesterday just prior to my posting my problem and they don't seem to be the cause of theproblem either. It's like, it get's enough fuel, airand spark to start up fine every time I try but, then it just dies / won't idol at all. And giving it gasdoesn't make a difference. It just falls off and dies.I'm thinking maybe the Throttle Position Sensor or something. I don't want to just blindly through parts at it, that can be very expensive. I am hoping someone will have had a like issue with their 2.3L Mustang and know what part fixed it.</P>

Check fuel pressure it could be a weak fuel pump. This is not uncommon

 

I'm thinking the pump is going bad. try to listen for the buzz from the gas tank

 

I hear a buzz but its from the bee's nest in the tree.

 

I had the 2.3L in a ranger pickup and it started doing the same thing. It had spark and fuel, but the timing belt had shed a couple teeth, so the valve timing was out to lunch. The truck had about 78k miles on it. I think the recommended change interval is 50K. The head has enough clearance so the valves will not mash into the pistons, thank goodness. I guess you can see if the #1 cyl. is on the compression stroke when the dist. rotor points to #1 cylinder? If your engine is like mine was, the harmonic balancer/pulley has to come off to remove the cover and belt.

I do hear the initial Fuel Pump loading (buzz?) when I turn the key. Thinking about it today, itdoesn't respond to the gas pedel at all. When I start the car and then push on the pedel, or if I don't, still nothing happens, it just dies. It used to act like I could set the choke, it ran at a higher RPM if I hit the pedel befor starting it. Now it just starts right up but then itdies <IMG src=smileys/smiley11.gif border="0">... That's why I am thinking that it maight be the TPS. It's like the throttle is nothooked up and the adjustment screw is all the way out or something. So, I'm thinking (and it's bigining to hurt a bit <IMG src=smileys/smiley3.gif border="0">) that it starts from the fuel sent by the fuel pump, but it's not constent enough to keep it running? It there even a chance that I could be on track here?</P>
