engine swap questions
so im in dire need of a new engine, right now i have a 289 with a few new parts, but it just needs so much work, it would be easier to just swap it out for a crate engine or a used engine.
i was wondering if an engine from a wrecked car like on this site
http://www.actionsalvage.com/enginesford.asp
or would it be better for a mild performance classic engine like here
http://www.proformanceunlimited.com/ford.html
but im on a tight budget (dad made really bad financial decisions) so i think that a cheap 3k one from a wrecked car would be better...what do you guys think i should do?
BTW, i have a 1966 coupe.

well, right now it is a completely stock 289, with a new 600 CFM edelbrock, and matching manifold...i really want to ditch this engine for something bigger, or something modern.
i know getting a used engine from a wrecked car seems sketchy, but it does come with a warranty, plus it has been rebuilt
my parents also wont let me build up the engine how i want to, so if i get one from a 2000-2008 mustang gt, they wont even second guess themselves. they just look at the cubes, i look at the fact its DOHC =D

The late model 4.6 isn't going to fit without alot of work. It's alot wider than the 289. Not even the same design as the 289/302. Check out other places if you're looking at a crate engine. CHP, FRPP and a bunch of others sell a nice long block that would be less than 3K.

4.6 is the last freaking thing you would want, ditch the 289 and build yourself a motor - take your pick because you've got alot of options. Also check out local trade shows and races / craigslist etc - you can probably find a good used built motor on the cheap

someone told me also that i could probably bargain with some dealers since the times are a little rough, other than that though, the cheapest engine i have found was about 5K.
ya, people are telling me that the 4.6 wouldnt fit easily, and it would actually be about a 12k job...so i think i want a 351W, which i heard is a tight squeeze, but will fit.
