DOESNT START ON FIRST TRY!!!!!
HELLO EVERYONE, new to the forum but not to mustangs.... i just got a 98 gt and when i go to start it cranks and cranks and doesnt start so i tried to turn the key to the on postion to let the fuel pump kick on about three times i do this and then it will start.so im thinking fuel pump or regulator or even a filter??? not sure i have never had this happen, it runs fine after it starts with no signs of lossing fuel so thats why i think it could be the filter but not sure any help would be appreciated
Do you hear the pump all the time when you turn the key forward? It could be a bad fuel pump relay. Its not the regulater that wouldnt due it.Mabey put a fuel pressure gauge on it and see whats happening.
doesnt sound like it's gettin enough gas without the pump running for a long time.
Maybe the pump is going bad and is not generating pressure quickly enough. You may want to check your filters and put a pressure guage on it like 99saleen351r suggested.
Dies it do the same thing if you run the car then shut it off for a few minutes then try to start it again?

Since it starts right back up, I'm thinking its something under the hood. Something is letting the pressure bleed off some way. Maybe a problem with the injectors.
I'm not an expert in EFI but since it starts right back up I would say the pump & filter are ok. It's just the pump has to work longer to pressurize the fuel system on a cold start. I would think that's cause something is not closing completly when the key is turned off. Does it smoke a lot when you start it after it sets for a few hours?
Maybe one of the EFI experts here can comment further?

well the car does start also if you just keep cranking it, but i use the on off on method. if it was a injector it would prolly affect the performance of the vehicle. no smoking either
IMHO, I dont think the injector would have to be off much to allow the system to depressurize over time.
By letting the pump run to build up pressure, it will eventually start.
Any EFI experts willing to comment?
