Default New OBDII mode coming in 2010

A new OBDII mode will begin to show up on 2010 model year cars. A tenth mode, or what is officially known as Mode $0A, is required to be on 50% of cars made in 2010-2011. 100% on 2012 and later.

Essentially, Mode 10 is the "You cant fool us" mode. This mode is mainly for states with vehicle safety inspections.
As it is now, if you have a code stored in the ECU, it can be erased by clearing it with a scan tool, or disconnecting the battery for a short period of time. Mode 10 captures and stores this information and CANNOT be erased by either method. It will store the code(s) until the ECU determines the problem no longer exists. Which means it has to be fixed, and the ECU tests everything to make sure its good. No more "clear the code, hurry up and get it inspected before it comes back on" situations.

Sorry guys

I wish more computer hackers would turn their attention to automotive PCM's and hand held tuners...

Sorry guys
Most states that require the OBDII light be unlit for inspection also plug in a handheld to verify the ECU has completed a Drive Cycle before signing off on the inspection anyways.

If the OBDII system comes back, not ready for test or whatever the specific message is, they'll tell you come back in a few hundred miles. This "New" mode is not going to change anything if the state doesn't bother to hook up a scanner anyways. If the light is off and that's all you go by, no amount of code erasing fail safes will change that.

You can all breath now

If a computer can be programmed, it can be tricked...

simple enough... just like $3.00 worth of electronic parts shut my CEL off from removing the cat in my 2000 S10

09 f150 already has mode 10, and as derf00 said the obd2 monitors have to be completed to pass emissions. this will change nothing.

It must suck to live in a state that inspects your damn vehicle and makes YOU pay for it.

Me at the DMV:

"I just bought a car, and need to register it."

Lady at counter: "License and title please."

"Here ya go."

"Ok, that'll be $54.00."

"Here ya go."

"Here's your new plates and registration, have a nice day."
