Default painting question

Im going to get a new hood soon and need to have it painted. My car is the redfire metallic color and it is about 80$ online. The hood comes primed gray when i buy it. So i call a local painter and he says it would cost about 300-400 to paint just the hood. Thats not including labor costs. How could it be that high? he kinda lost me

300-400 is pretty high for a hood without labor.

youd only need a pint of paint which would run about $80 plus the reducer then the clear and catalyst.

id put it at about $300 total between labor & materials and thats using good PPG Deltron paints. you go with the cheap omni and i could see it being $80

also the place youre buying from most likely just runs them through a booth quick with the cheapest paint you can buy.

there is no such thing as "without labor". Primed new parts, are not ready for paint, they have to blocked, sealed, painted and cleared, as I assume that 400 includes blending the fenders, it costs $ for factory quality, if you just want the hood sprayed it should run 200-250.
