Trick to remove top transmission bolt?
Hi,
I'm helping a friend change the clutch on a 2000 GT. We have the car on my lift and we have a transmission jack under the tranny. We've managed to loosen all the bolts except the top one on the drivers side. We've tried to lower the trans as much as possible to get some clearance and have about 5 extensions with a universal on the socket, but it wont break free.
Any tricks on how to get this bolt out? Can it be reached from the engine compartment? Is there any way to get to it straighter from underneath?
Thanks.
George

what i mentioned above is what i used to remove my top tranny bolts.
have you tried soaking the bolts in PB blaster for a couple of minutes? if that doesnt work you can always try heating them up with a torch.

Sockets with 3/8's universals joints are crap. Use a swivel socket. They are cut different and are more effective than a socket AND a universal.
Also for the often frozen top trans to bellhousing bolts. Try a 1/2" drive impact socket with a long extension so it's pretty straight and hit it from the rear of the trans. Multiple extensions take all the shock out of an impact gun.
Worst case scenario. Unbolt the bellhousing from the engine.

I had sprayed PB Blaster on it several times. I was using a socket with a universal with multiple extensions (all 1/2 inch), and like Jfsram says, I think that was making the impact wrench ineffective.
But, we finally got it! My friend had to leave for a bit and when he came back, he tried it with a manual 1/2 inch rachet with the universal and multiple extensions and it came out! Now we have it all apart, he's going to take the flywheel to be resurfaced and maybe we can reassemble most of it tomorrow!
Next time I'll get a swivel socket.
945lstang and Jfsram - thanks for the advice!
