Default Used K&N Air Filter

I recently purchased a used K&N filter off of ebay it is model # E-0940 and it is for my 1995 mustang GT, i have two questions #1 is it supposed to have a black rim with a purple gauze cotton filter material? because the one they sent me in the K&N box has an orange rim on the bottom, a yellow gauze filter material, and on the top a black cone shaped head, it looks nothing like any of the filters shown on the box. On the bottom it says Slot, and Made In USA this made me wonder, is this really a geniune K&N? My 2nd question is i was reading the lil pamphlet that came included in my box it said the K&N filter needed to oiled etc, i don't have any of the K&N brand oil, will i need to buy some? or will some other oil product work? thank you!

I believe your K&N filters are typically orange or black. Sounds like that is an off brand filter. Also, a true K&N will already be in a plastic type bag that is already pre-oiled. You will have to buy the kit to clean it and re-oil it as it gets dirty.

I've seen the majority of KN filters that have a blue filter with a black rubber seal around it. Go search around for a K&N recharge kit, the kit comes with everything you need to get that filter cleaned and oiled and stuck back in that airbox.

If it is a genuine K&N air filter it will definitely have a "K & N" stamp on it. Not a sticker, actually stamped into the rubber. I'm not sure what colors they've used over he years, but the K&N stamp has to be there.

You might have gotten one of the new Fram Air Hog gauze filters. Basically a clone of the K&N. Any parts store that carries Fram will probably also have their Air Hog line on the self as well if you want to compare yours. Pep Boys carries both Air Hog and K&N to compare to.

the K&Ns i have used were always blue with black rubber.

you can buy a filter cleaning kit anywhere.

By the way....K&N is one of our site sponsors. click on their link up top and ask somebody.
