Default Tach help

I have a 72 ranchero and I installed a fuel injected 302 out of a mustang into it. The car runs great, and with the fuel injection it gets almost 18 miles to the gallon. Really turned out to be a great car. Anyway, I want the factory tach to work but when I hook up the coil side of the tach to the neg on the coil the car dies. So I put a diode in line and tried that and it kind of worked. The tach reads right, but the higher the rpm goes the worse it runs. If anyone has a sugestion I would really appreciate it. I know that this is propably posted in the wrong place, sorry about that. But there are a lot of very smart people on this forum, and maybe someone ran into this problem in a different swap.

Thanks, Tom
