Default Sputters, almost chokes off

Been having some trouble the last couple of days. My 88 is a daily driver (short-trips) and has had some engine work done to build it up inside. Yesterday this started. Turn the key (fuel pump is heard), turn it over, takes quite awhile longer to finally start. While driving, if I give it too much gas it tries to sputter out and give me nothing, so I have to save it by pushing in the clutch, rev it up a little, then continue driving, but it will do that in every gear. seems to me like it's not getting fuel or not getting enough air. What should I start with?

Start by checking your fuel pressure. Sounds like your pump is getting weak or filter is getting plugged.
