Default RE: is oil consumption normal?

im assuming your saying mustangs have low tension oil rings??

As far as oil itself goes...im a novice in synthetic.

i have an s10 blazer with 335k original miles and doesnt burn oil or smoke or tick. Runs like new. That oil was changed EVERY 2k miles since say one...but it was changed with whatever brand my uncle happened to pick up at the store. (he heard changing oil brands was good) He ran 10-30 in the winter....10-40 in the spring and fall....and 20-50 in the summer. Most of the miles on that car are from long highway miles and he always felt long trips at 75 mph broke down oil so thicker oil was necessary to make up for it.

I pretty much kept that schedule with that car and the 01 explorer i owned for a year. In my four stroke dirtbike, i run AMSOIL 10-40 pretty much year round. Excellent oil.

Now that i have my stang, i decided i was definately going to run synthetic. Most of the auto places seem to mainly carry mobil 1 in either 5-30 or 10-30....so im running 10w-30. THe only time ive seen 10-40 was in "truck and suv" formula, whatever that is??? And then there was 20-50, but i wasnt sure if that was too much. What do u guys think i should do?

btw, i changed my mobil 1 every 2500 miles. Thanks for all the tips

Yes, Ford has been using them (low tension oil control rings) for as far as I know since the mid 80's on the 5.0. A lot more vehicles are now using them to reduce frictional hp loss which will also result in increased mpg. Every little bit helps. I am just assuming that they are also used on the 4.6 which is a good bet. Even with standard oil control rings a quart of oil between changes is not uncommon. I run 10-30 in the winter since we go well below freezing here and 20-50 once the outside temp goes over freezing consistently. Look up specs on any oil and you'll see that the additive package of nearly any 20-50 engine oil is much better than the energy conserving oils. All in all 20-50 is better for the engine but is not typically recommended due to the .1 or .2 less mpg you will get when you use it.

are u referring to 20-50 synthetic or just 20-50 in general? I couldnt seem to find any 10-40 mobil 1 formula so i guess the next change ill go with 20-50. thanks for all the help.

I am referring to 20w-50 in general. I had some info that was developed from the motorcycle community that showed that 20-50 is always better than the energy conserving oils. If I find it, I'll post it.

I haven't checked my 2000 since I changed the oil last. I'll let you know. But my '96 used to burn a quart pretty quick if I got into it a lot. If I stayed out of it, it wouldn't burn a drop. I've heard guys say they could burn a quart in 500 miles if they kept their foot in it. I would think that would be excessive, but what your describing is not.
