V6 or V8 for Daughter's First Car
Ok, I made the decision. Most likely my daughter is going to get a mustang for her first car because I feel comfortable with the make and model. She has been driving my GT with a learner's permit for about a year now so here is our situation.
I would prefer her getting a 1994-1995 V6 because of the cost of insurance, ease in getting parts, and the difference in horsepower of the V8. We have been looking at V6s at used car lots because there are so few in our area for sale by private parties. The problem is that the V6s seen have had such terrible care inside and out. They aren't worth the price they are asking for without putting more money into it. The interior is worn and dirty, there needs to be major bodywork and bumpers have been messed up and no CD player. I don't want to invest any more than the initial investment because it's the first car and most likely won't last very long. My reasoning is because accident rates for teenages are high.
Since I have a GT I am constantly comparing my car to the V6. I was hoping to find a nice V6 with the same features. Am I looking for a needle in a haystack? Did the V6 come with leather seats and CD players or fog lights?
My daughter has learned how to drive on a 4 cyc. Honda Accord and on the GT. While looking on AutoTrader, the GTs aren't that much more in price. Should I go ahead and let her have a GT because they are given better care? She has agreed to paying for the car and all related expenses.
Now somebody said that the 5.0 GT is better because of the tlocs and that the V8 of the above years has the lowest hp as well. Are there any other safety features that the GT has over the V6?
I will admit the idea of her having a better engine than I do is not appealing. LOL!!

You bring up several aspects that need to be considered. Insurance being one of them. What is the price difference between the V6 and V8? You also mentioned traction loc and the HP difference as well.
Lets seperate the two. What you save in insurance may very well be put back into the car for sprucing it up.
Traction loc and HP difference...it's for your daughter. Don't give her more than what she's ready for. The learners permit means she has had you or another adult riding with her every time she takes the car out. Kids do crazy things when testing their boundries or their friends are with them (show off, get distracted, etc). Your idea of sticking with a V6 is a prudent one.
As for the condition of the Private Party ones, you may want to try the ones on the Dealer lots or used car lots. They've been given the once over and will usually have some sort of 1 long or month long warranty on them. They will also be clean inside and out. The extra money you put towards a dealer car will make up for itself in piece of mind and elbow grease saved.
Just my 2 cents as a parent with a 2000 V6 and an almost (1 month away) 15 yr old daughter.

My first car was a 1995 V6 mustang and I loved it. I then realized it was slow as hell and wanted to get a GT. After about 3 years of learning how to drive and doing a little growing up my parents decided I was mature enough for a GT.
Id say get her a nice V6 for her first car and if down the road you feel she is worthy, get her a GT.

i started on my fav oh, but i have been driving things since i was 11 here in kicksville canada, so it was alright for me. i know ive done dumb stuff and i dont think she should have a GT, get her a 6er!!
Yeah I would say V6. For my first year ofhaving my licence I had a 4cyl VW and after I learned how to control a car I went ahead and got myself the V8. I still had a lot to learn after that. The V8 may not have that much hp ('94 215hp) but it still had a hell of a kick. Let her get a V6 and if she decideds she wants a V8 after a while and there have been no accidents then let her get one.
give her yours and buy yourself a faster one. non pi convertible is one of the slower v8 mustangs so its not too unsafe and you know what it's been through cause you've owned it

which one do you think a teenager is more likely to do more damage in should be your question...
i konw its not any fun to consider the worst case scenario, but sometims its the better idea i think
its 100 % likely she is going to do somthing stupid, and dangerous shortly after she gets her car... i dont konw anyone who has never done this,, including me, adn i consider myself a VERY VERY conservative driver to say the least
odds are an automatic 6 cylinder is less likely to be traveling at a high speed off the side of a country road... i hate to sound so negative, but its just hypathetical
plus, insurance is gonna be a beast,, just look around, i KNOW that if you look for a couple weeks you can find nice 6cylinders with low miles for a decent price, especailly if you widen your search from 94-04
good luck with everything
