if you want the absolute best radar detector, then you have two options

the Beltronics RX65 unit......wich will run you 3-4 hundred
(i had one of these for about 6 months and it works like a CHARM)

or you could get the Valintine 1, probably the same price if not a lil bit more expensive

IMO the Valentine 1 is THE BEST!!! it is a little pricy but you get what you pay for. IT is undetecable, has great range, and has directional arrows. I would go with the Valentine!!!

I have an escort passport 8500, it was a bit expensive, but it most certainly has paid for itself in the past months. Another good option is the valentine 1 which most other people love as well. My friend has the valentine and based on what I've seen is that these 2 have comparable detection capabilities. The only difference is that the valentine has arrows to show the direction of the signal. Some people like it, but I didn't care for it

There are not two options, but three. Your Bel and Escort run hand in hand as far as performance and price. They are both a little pricey, but less than Valentine 1, which is probably top dog but not by alot as far as peformance over your top Bel or Escort. It does have directional arrows which are helpful. Ebay will be your best bet. If you are just patient you can find a nice radar for a good price. Anything less than these three is a waste of money. Your Cobra's, Whistlers, radio shack, etc....are just not good pieces. This is one area that.....you get what you pay for. Its better to pay money now and have something to show for it than pay for a ticket, higher insurance, points on your license, etc...
Never depend on any radar totally, but if you learn to use one correctly.....you will be fine. Hey, but what do I know, Im just a Cop.....lol!!

alright, well ive had five radar detectors since i got my liscense 3 years ago...and ive had all trucks before my mustang (still did 80 to work tho)

For a cheaper but good performing radar detector, id go with the PMI silver bullet sensoro. Excellent detector for teh money.

I just did my own shootout between the V1 and the escort x50 and i kept the escort. I know for a fact both are good performers but i dont know which is better. Either way, the difference is small. I chose to keep my escort because it was a million times more usable. The V1 was way too annoying as far as false alarms go. I dont care how much better the v1 detects than the escort, its useless if you cant take it seriously. Even on the LEAST sensitive mode, the thing was going off non stop!!! Maybe for pure highway driving, i woud consider it, but for suburbs type driving your better off turning it off than keeping it on. Non to mention the escort it much easier to operate and nicer looking. And u can custom program the whole damn thing. for 360, i got teh escort and a 3 year warranty and a case and everything. For 400 i got a V1 and uh....thats it. You decide.

The under $200 radar detectors will let you know when there's a cop around,a burglar alarm, and door opener also. This will cause you to disregard the alert at a very bad time. The V1 has a target counter along with directional arrows. The target counter has saved me a couple of times.Good radar detectors are not cheap.Cheap radar detectors are not good.
