Do you want help on what the cause was or help on how to fix the leak and replace the oil?

Block the front wheels, jack and support the back of the car, and pull the diff cover (with a drain pan underneath). Check for any damage on the gears, excessive play, or anything like that, as well as inspect the fluid for chunks of metal. Then reseal that bish with a gasket/sealant/both, and refill fluid via the full plug on the front of the pumpkin (use a 3/8 ratchet exension to get the plug out). Fill fluid until it comes out of the filler hole.

And dont forget the friction modifier

Friction modifier would be needed for a limited slip differential.

The clunking could be excessive backlash or worn out pinion bearings.
