Default gas cap lifespan

Hey All! I am getting a gas fume smell in my garage. I thought it was coming from my neighbors POS monte carlo but when I open the fuel door I get a faint whiff of fumes. Just wondering what the life span is on a gas cap, it's an '04 and I've never owned a car long enough to even worry about it.

Thanks!

well, i have a 94 and it still has the original gas cap. you might want to get a new one just in case though. i dont think they are that expensive.
