Default Should "Service Engine Soon" Light Turn Itself Off?

My Service Engine Soon light was on recently, displaying a code from a problem that was resolved several months ago. The code was read ("Cylinder 1 Misfire") and cleared. About 5 minutes later, the light came back on. Today, the light is OFF, without having the code cleared.

Should the Service Engine Soon light turn off on its own, or is this indicating a possible problem with the computer chip?

Also, where is the chip located in a 2001 V6? Is it something that I can replace myself?

Thanks

mine did that to me not to long ago it came on then when i got back in the car it was off then about 2 weeks later it came back on and had it checked out. it was my fuel line pruge valve, the only explanation is that it was stuck so the light came on then got unstuck so light went off. then the part finally pooped out, so it could be a sign of sumthing about to go wrong

Many times on a misfire, the CEL comes on during the actual problem then shuts back off after it clears. It also may flash during misfire conditions.
