My stock battery just died. I replaced it with a battery from O'Reilly's. With the battery came a plastic black elbow for use with a "vent tube". Did some searching and found that the tube is to vent the hydrogen built up as a byproduct of the battery.

Is the vent tube really necessary? Obviously the stock battery did not have a tube. How concerned should I be about this?
