Unhappy Leaking Gas While Filling Up

Hello All and thank you in advance for any help or advice you can give me on my issue.

The other day i went to fill up the tank on my 2005 V6 4.0 Mustang and within seconds of the attendant pumping the gas it began a steady stream of gas leaking right behind my rear left tire. I told him immediately to stop, once he did so did the leaking of gas. I parked the car back in my garage and didn't notice any leaking at all.

I want to get an idea of what could be my issue besides a hole in my tank, could this be anything else and around how much would this cost to repair?

Thanks again guys for your help.

I had the exact same issue with my '94. The gasket sealing the filler neck to the tank needed replacement. Very simple and easy...It was one of the few times when I got away much cheaper than I expected!

The only area I'm a little concerned with is that your car is only 4 years old. Mine is 15 and I'm from the desert where things tend to dry out quickly. Hopefully the gasket cures your problem.

Could be a torn filler hose. 4 years is plenty of time for something to hit it.

OR

The gas attendant is stupid and started putting gas onto the top of the filler hole, which would cause it to run down the backside. I'm talking about the black plastic piece around the filler.

Thanks guys, i'm going to do some more investigating to determine if the problem lies with the gasket sealer or a torn filler hose. I'm guessing this is a do it yourself project with some assistance and patience being i'm a novice to mechanical work. Thanks again....

Where the hell do they have attendants?????? I have never seen one in my life.....

Anyways Im betting on the torn rubber hose, it took me about 5min to replace the one in my buddies 63 impala, however it may take you longer with how new the car is. It should be like two clamps holding it on, the only hard part is getting the hose on and off in the area you have to work.

Probably one of the most dangerous jobs to have in NYC besides the 24hr corner store operators, but we got plenty of these gas pumping tools around the city.
