the filter is actually closer to the inner fender (more to the left) but that is a rough sketch...

My K&N filter is twice the size of that one about 10 inches long and 6 inches wide and fits fine in the wheel well but I have a power pipe its on the end of.I could also fitt a bigger one in there but it might hang below the bumper cover. The cold air pipe turns and faces down in the fender well right?

yes (about 45 degrees though.). im actually contemplating getting a larger k&n filter b/c its been 10k miles since i put that kit on and i think ill need a new one soon. if i get a larger filter, i wont have my "ram air" setup b/c it wont fit without a very sharp/restrictive bend.

I see, Atlantic....it's not air recirculation, but a form of cold air tapping--you're tapping the colder air from the lower bumper area--That's quite ingenious! Now I understand. Great pic by the way. HAHAHA....no, seriously, that pic answered my question exactly. So the air coming from the bottom of the fender is actually colder than the air from the wheel well? This is quite fascinating!

I am going to adapt your system and make it a reciculation system--Not going to connect the ducts to the CAI, but have them put the air directly into the engine bay--cooling off that air--in Miami, keeping your engine cold is a HUGE thing---That's why we only race at night...

cool, night racing... scary to me. lol. yea im definitely considering dumping my "ram air setup" though b/c i thought asbout how you were talking about the larger filter... etc. so im going to purchase a larger k&n filer to fit on my cai pipe in the fender so ill be getting more colder air, ill sacrifice air velocity for more of it.

If you're feeling down about sacrificing the air being "rammed" into the intake, do this, and you will feel much better: Make sure your hands are nice and clean and there's no dust, crap around--take the filter off and turn the engine on: Place your hand over the mouth of the MAF and accelerate the car by the throttle body. Feel the amount of suction? Your hand has to feel MORE FORCE, much more force than that when you're driving and stick your hand out of the window in order to get any gain from the ram air setup--

What do I mean? The car's natural aspiration SUCKS in air pretty damn hard--up to 6-8 pounds per minute at wide open throttle. In order to get any advantage from the air being rammed into your CAI by a fender, or hoodscoop for that matter, you'd have to be going 100+ miles per hour. The advantage is not so tremendously great, despite what they may want you to believe.

So, don't worry about air speed or air intake rate--go with the larger filter... ;-)

Cheers!

that does make a lot of sense man.. thatnks for the visual. thats why my car intake got louder at 90+mph! so now im convinced to get rid of my ram air and go with a bigger/better filter. thanks again man

No, thank you! Your ram intake idea is a damn rad idea! I freakin' love
it...I'm going to try to modify it a little, and call it the Miami Atlantic
Blue Air Recirculation System (MABARS)--too much? LOL

"hey, what are you runing under there?"
"I got a vortech supercharger, 250 shot of NOS, and a mabars setup"
"Mabars?! No ****! Wicked! I want one!"

LOL

OK...I'm back. Just did the filter swap, and I kept my ebay CAI intake tubes. FINALLY, the pictures and proof I was telling you about. The blue filter is the ebay BOMZ CAI, and the purple is the K&N. Scroll all the way to the botto for the rest of the post.

Check out especially the last picture:

Little bit of a difference, huh? AtlanticBlue--this K&N doesn't fit inside the wheel well. I have two identical K&N filters--if you want one, I'll mail it to you, although I'm not sure it fits on a V6...check.

As for the stats and difference between the crappy ebay filter and the K&N filter, finally definitive proof!!:

Run 1: 0-97 mph in 15.42 seconds with ebay filter

Run 2: 0-103 mph in 15.67 seconds with K&N filter

Here are the stats for each run--god, I wish could graph this.

Run 1: Throttle position (TP) 19 % at ~1 lb/min air intake rate (AIR) (idle); 56 % TP at 4300 RPM: 13 lbs/min AIR; 98.7% TP at 5895 RPM: 23 lbs/min AIR--Air temp: 106 degrees at idle, 87 degrees at 80+ mph.

Run 2: TP 19% at 1.8 lb/min AIR (idle); 55% TP at 4400 RPM: 28.9 lb/min; 99.2% TP at 5900 RPM: 39.6 lb/min--air temp 111 degrees at idle, 93 degrees at 80+ mph.

There you have it! Definitive proof that the K&N outperformed the pants out of the eBay filter. Although the air temp was higher because the filter is located in the engine bay, rather than the wheel well, it is clear that the response of throttle position to mass air intake rate was almost DOUBLED. 23 pounds per minute on the ebay CAI, 39.6 pounds per minute on the K&N. And the acceleration proves it. Look at that 6 mph difference with a difference of only a quarter of a second!

Your honor, I rest my case. ;-)
