Default Car cover

Hello all,

As circumstances have laid out for me this winter, my car will not have a garage to keep it out of the harsh winter weather. So I am considering doing a car cover. Let me know what you guys think about car covers: issues with them, do they really help, pain to use, etc.

I think I mostly need to prevent the frozen wind/rain blowing in my grille while it is parked, but I thought I could try to keep all that ice and frozen rain off my paint as well.

I have found a lot of cheep ones on ebay, so thoughts on those are welcome as well. One auction I thought was nice is the following, let me know how you guys feel about this.

Thanks!!

if you are driving your car regularly then a car cover would be pretty pointless. in order to use the cover, your paint needs to be clean, otherwise you will get tons of swirls. but if you just drive it occasionally then i would make sure to buy a water resistant one because you dont want water to get trapped between the cover and the paint or it will mold. if you drive it everyday, then your best bet would probably to be just make sure you have a good coat of wax on the car to keep the salt, etc from harming your paint. and im not sure what the easiest way to keep ice out of your grill would be, other than parking near a structure that would block the wind from blowing it in.

I haven't kept my car in a garage since it was new.So far keeping it clean and waxed has been enough so the paint still looks brand new.Driving the car in winter with cinders and salt is WAAAAY harder on the paint than sitting under snow.

The cover can trap dust and moisture under it and cause damage.I say leave the cover at E-Bay and get a good paint sealer.

Chopper,

A few questions about sealer.

1.) Do I still use wax on the car after the sealant, or before, or not at all. I still want me car to give the high gloss and shine.

2.) Should I wash my car with dawn to get the existing wax off before redoing it?

Thanks for your help.

I would use some kind of dish soap to clean off all the old wax, then claybar, then use a very fine grade of rubbing compund, then use the sealer.
If you use the "apply as you dry" type of waxes everytime you wash the car you should be in good shape as far as paint protection goes.Make sure to use something with a UV blocker also.

Thanks Chopper for the help.

I am still entertaining opinions for the car cover. Does anyone else have any advice on car covers or other alternative ideas such as Chopper.

Thanks again.
