Default Need Recipe's For Homemade Rust Remover.

Just got back 1994 302 back from my dads house.. was in his shop for about a year and half but he decided to roll it out beside his shop wrapped in a tarp.. Well Thanks to his great decisions and me finally buying a house with a garage its with me.

The engine is complete apart, The block has some rust in the cylinder walls and as you can imagine all around it. The heads which I had in his other shop are in good condition, just have some spider webs in the port holes but no rust in the ports or anywhere else on it. The crankshaft is completely rusted which I had in his shop the entire time. The crankshaft I am fairly sure its a lost cause, but there is no pits in the cylinder walls So I am very hopeful on the block.

If anyone has a good recipe for a soak or spray let me know. I am on a very tight budget I figure the cost of me having to have the shop check out and bore the block will cost me enough.

I don't know how good it is but I got this off the web....
Rust Remover: Sprinkle a little salt on the rust, squeeze a lime over the salt until it is well soaked. Leave the mixture on for 2 - 3 hours. Use leftover rind to scrub residue.

1000 grit sandpaper and WD 40 will take rust out of machined surfaces without ruining them.
Phosphoric acid solutions will remove rust but be sure to keep the solution away from anything else you don't want removed.

Default surface rust

Laquer thinner and a scotchbrite pad should take surface rust off nicely. thats what i used to clean up my old junkyard block and it still looks great.

WD-40 or any other penetrating oil and a scotch brite pad works well also. Be SURE to clean up any internal surfaces you use it on very well to leave as little abrasive residue as possible.
