Default timing retard/advance

Can someone tell me when to use these two options. I know using superchargers and nitrous is a factor in determining timing, is there anything else. Also, just for clarification, what exactly does timing retard and advance mean? I know that advance moves it forward and retard moves it back, but back from what? does the plug fire at TDC all the time? also, in what increments do you move up in?

you move timing in degrees. for your 4.6 you would have to get a timing adjuster.

you can advance the timing to give you more power. most of the time you will need to run a higher octane to keep it from detonating or pinging.

1) The plugs fire just before TDC.

2) You are advancing or retarding based on the factory setting which is something like 14 degrees (correct me if I'm wrong, please)

3) higher compression ratio engines and those with forced induction (superchargers and turbos), require less timing than a low compression, naturally aspirated engine.
