Rack and Pinion went out

Rack and Pinion went out
So i obviously don't know that much about my car, its a 2000 v6 mustang. I have about 52k miles on it, and power steering fluid kept running low, so kinda figured it was leaking. Took it to a local shop and he said the rack and pinion bar went out? the one that goes from wheel to wheel. Gonna cost 280 for the part and 110 for the labor, do they go out with this low miles often? Was it something with the way I drive that made it go out?

RE: Rack and Pinion went out
what does he mean by "it went out"? did it lose a seal or something?
Did you buy the car new? I can't figure out why it would just go like that unless it was in an accident or something.

RE: Rack and Pinion went out
Make sure the fittings going into the rack and pinion and out of the pump are not leaking. Then look at the boots on the ends of the rack housing. If they are leaking or full of fluid then it's more than likely the seals in the rack and pinion have failed.BTW you might have to clean all the old fluid off before you can pinpoint the leak if it's not the boots.

RE: Rack and Pinion went out
I had this problem before...the rack and pinion set up if fragile and doesn't handle rough bumps very well. I did it by going into a pothole left unmarked by the constgruction crew that put it there...it was doing 45 and then the rack and pinion whent out...mayb the problem.
