Default Best way to put a hole in my hood?

Im about to get a shaker system for my v6 2006, and I was wondering if using a saw would mess up the hood? Will the heat from the saw mess up the clear coat and change it colors? Also has anyone ever used the hydrolic shears and would they be better then a saw?

Please help thanks,
Tony

Ive got very little mustang specific info, so please excuse me if this suggestion is out of place but if your insistent on cutting a hole in your hood than I would recommend you stay away from hydraulic sheers and go for whatever tool gives you the most control. The least stupid way I can think of would be to use a dremel with the reinforced cutoff wheels and mask off everywhere you don’t want to damage incase you slip. However expect to need $50 worth of those wheels since they do wear down pretty quick, not to mention the amount of them that you will snap. You really should wear a full face mask unless you want to look like Frankenstein or Tony Montana from Scar-face after one of those cutoff wheels explodes at 12,000 rpm. I would allow a garden hose to lightly flow over your working area to prevent burning the clear coat but be careful to keep the electric dremel out of the water for obvious reasons, perhaps use a spray bottle instead of the hose. When you are finished with whatever shape you have just cut out you will need to paint the edges with something to prevent rust (perhaps just some clear coat).

Honestly though I would not bother cutting any part of my car unless I had the extra cash laying around to replace the part incase I messed it up. Plus is the shaker hood really worth the risk or you screwing up your car, or possibly having rust issues in the long term? All for what, a few more rwhp that you prob wont even notice?

I would look into other mods that might be less risky and offer more bang for the buck.

Good luck.

I would recommend a handheld set of sheet metal shears. Milwaukee has a set for around $200.00. You could probably rent them as well.

Also maybe take the template to a place that does sunroofs. Like an auto glass shop. When they do sunroofs they use a set like the ones above.

I would recommend just buying a hood with the cut out already in it

I was thinking about using a dremel but that will take too much time (IMO) for the amount of money that I have to spend on the 20 wheels I am going to have to buy. However if that may be what I have to do. Also I am trying to avoid hand held shears because I am worried it will warp the shape of my hood. But that is a good idea to take the hood to a place that cuts in sunroofs, I am going to have to look into that.

Thanks

Use a hand held jig saw with a fine tooth blade for cutting metal (about 22tpi). I did mine a few months ago and it did just fine. I didn't even remove the underside blanket. I cut through it all with no tearing... just a clean cut. Not enough heat is generated to do any damage to any paint or clear coat. Just make sure you use painter's tape on the hood before doing any cutting to minimize paint chipping.

Also... follow the link and read it 20 times before doing the install. Good luck!

Here's some pics of the finished product....

That turned out nice!

You could also use a rotozip tool. This is pretty much what the tool was designed to do.

Sounds like a good excuse for a new toy!

had to cut a whole in the hood of my 94 camaro cause i put a big block in the car i use a snapon air recipercatin saw with a very fine metal blade. tape of area with blue painters tape then put think 80ml tape over that to make tape even thicker then made cut. came out really nice. then i went to my buddy paint shop with the cut out and he got me the matching paint in a can tape it of agian spryed it down then clear over it and sanded it to match. so the edge would not rust all of work but now it wont flake off or pell off
