Default Acceleration problem

Hey everyone,
I've got a problem and I think it may be a throttle problem.

So I'm driving down the road, (I'm not out of gas) I simply press the throttle down and the car either
1) Won't respond (won't go faster)
2) Will actually slow down violently as if I'm out of gas

Any ideas of what this could be would be helpful. Also any ideas on how much this might cost to fix would really be great

Thanks a lot
Charles

Sounds ALOT like what happened to me. One possiblity is the the maf is bad. Take it out and look at the two little prongs in the body. If their broke replace it. If their black/dirty, clean them with a q-tip and alcohol. My car did the same thing, it would drive okay when I babied it, but when I stomped on it, it bucked and wouldn't go anywhere. Cleaned the maf and now it purrs like a kitten(or roars like a lion.lol)

good luck

Thanks for the tip

But what exactly is the MAF and how do I get to it? Hopefully that's my problem because I don't have the money for some huge repair right now. Thanks in advance.

Charles

BTW

It's an 84' 3.8L V6

The MAF is short for mass air flow sensor. If your stang is not fuel injected, I don't think you'll find one on it. But if it is fuel injected (not sure the first year the mustang went that direction), it is on the engine side of the air filter.

Good Luck!

Yeah the 3.8L 1984 Mustang isn't fuel injected so I've got a carborator. My next move is to clean up the carborator and fuel filter and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the tip, though.

Charles

Ok so I was cleaning up the carborator and realized my air filter is really really dirty so I'm guessing it's been choking the car for power. I go to get a new air filter but of course they're sold out and no one's open on labor day! The search continues tomorrow...[sm=boosign.gif]
