I beg to differ. Your engine will run poorly with a HG that is on its way out (cracked if you like) but once it blows and you have coolent running into the cyl. the car will "run" but you WILL KNOW that something is wrong. I ran my 95 with a headgasket on its way out and yes it did run but once the headgasket blew; the car was completely dead.
To the OP- I do not believe it is a HG issue. I am not very knowledgable on the S197's so it might be better if you check out that (S197) section.
